You notice something and a story begins to form.

A short reply.

An unfamiliar expression.

An image that catches your attention.

You may find yourself wondering:

  • What am I seeing?

  • Why does this detail stand out?

  • How much am I noticing and how much am I filling in?

Tarot offers an opportunity to explore these questions through imagery.

You may be curious about the cards but feel unsure where to begin. Perhaps you reach for a guidebook before giving yourself time to look.

Or, you already use tarot and would welcome an approach that leaves room for uncertainty, personal associations, and more than one possible reading.

In this class, we’ll slow down that movement from noticing to interpreting.

You’ll practice describing what is visible, exploring what it evokes, and considering a possible meaning without needing to settle on a final answer.

What becomes possible when you
give yourself time to look?

Tarot as a Threshold offers a structured introduction to symbolic self-inquiry.

Together, we’ll explore how images, colors, numbers, and symbols can become prompts for reflection.

Traditional associations will offer reference points alongside your own responses and real-world experience.

You’ll practice:

  • Separating an observable detail from the interpretation you give it

  • Exploring shared symbolism alongside personal associations

  • Considering more than one possible reading

  • Asking questions that support reflection and choice

  • Recognizing when an interpretation requires more information beyond the cards

  • Allowing an image to feel meaningful, uncertain, or unrelated to your experience

The invitation is to become more curious about how you make meaning and more discerning about what you take with you.

Our Approach

Curiosity. Self-inquiry. Discernment.

Curiosity
Begin with what catches your attention. Look closely, notice details,
and allow questions to arise before seeking an answer.

Self-inquiry
Explore the associations and responses an image brings forward.
You decide what feels relevant and how much you wish to explore.

Discernment
Hold interpretations lightly. Consider other possibilities, distinguish
reflection from evidence, and leave room for direct conversation or
further information.

Throughout the class, the cards remain prompts for inquiry. Your choices remain yours.

What We Will Explore

The deck as a map, not a mandate

Meet the Major and Minor Arcana and the four suits. Explore their associations as a starting structure, without needing to memorize the deck.

Looking before concluding

Practice noticing figures, objects, colors, foreground, and background. Learn to distinguish what appears in an image from the story you begin forming around it.

Symbols and personal meaning

Explore how traditional associations and your own responses can sit alongside one another. A symbol may invite several interpretations.

Questions that open space

Practice moving from questions about future outcomes or another person’s thoughts toward questions about your experience, available information, and choices.

Another angle

Consider reversals as an optional way to shift perspective. A different orientation can invite another look without requiring a different meaning.

Guided practice and reflection

Bring these ideas together through a guided card exploration, a brief look at how two images may relate, and reflective writing.

You may participate quietly, pass on an activity, or leave a question unresolved.

Meet Your Guides

We’re Shannon and Angie, licensed clinical social workers, educators, longtime colleagues and friends.

Shannon is a psychotherapist and the founder of Thresholds of Self. Angie is a clinical mental health therapist and yoga teacher. Both enjoy the practice of tarot and the ongoing opportunities it offers for exploration, reflection, and insight.

We’re excited to bring our shared experience and perspectives to this class!

Together, we have supported people in approaching their experiences and ways of making meaning with curiosity, compassion, and greater choice.

Tarot as a Threshold brings this educational approach to symbolic imagery. We’ll offer structure, questions, and room to explore as you engage with the cards and consider what arises for you.

In this class, we participate as educators and facilitators, not as your therapists or as authorities who can determine what a card reveals about your life or the choices you should make.

Our approach respects your authority over your own inner life, observations, and interpretations. We’ll support you in looking closely, considering multiple possibilities, and developing practices that deepen your discernment.

This Class May Be for You If…

  • You already use tarot and would like to explore a different way of engaging with it

  • You value personal choice and room to disagree, pause, or remain uncertain

You can arrive with questions, skepticism, familiarity, or no previous tarot experience.
